Have you ever watched a show that started with Previously on…? The show then looks back at what happened on past episodes. Show writers do this to remind watchers about what was going on in the show since the last time they watched.
Well rereading is the same concept and it is a very important tool for any reader. So why should we reread?
- REFRESH MEMORY - Often times we need to look back at text to remind us about what was happening in the story. Sometimes it is a whole day or more since the last time the story was read.
- FLUENCY - When we read something again, the text is more familiar to us, making our reading sound smoother and give an opportunity to add expression.
- NOTICE NEW THINGS - When going back to the text, we often catch things that we didn’t notice the first time, helping us better understand the story.
